Despite her international stardom, Susan remains true to her roots in Blackburn, West Lothian. She is celebrated not just for her powerful vocals, but for her down-to-earth nature and her inspiring journey from a local church choir singer to a Grammy-nominated artist. Today, she continues to perform and record, proving that talent knows no age and that dreams, no matter how long held, can come true.

Boyle grew up in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland.[17] Her father, Patrick Boyle, was a miner and veteran of World War II and her mother Bridget was a shorthand typist.[18] Both of her parents were born in Motherwell, Scotland, but also had family links to County Donegal in Ireland. Born when her mother was aged 45 years, she was the youngest of four brothers and five sisters.[17] She grew up thinking that she had been briefly deprived of oxygen during a difficult birth resulting in a learning disability.[21] However, she was told in 2012–13 that she had been misdiagnosed and is on the autism spectrum with an IQ "above average".[22] She says she was bullied as a child. After leaving school with few qualifications, she took part in government training programmes and performed at local venues.
