Emma was curious about the old Victorian house that her parents had bought. She loved exploring its rooms and finding hidden treasures. One day, she decided to check out the attic. She climbed the stairs and opened the door.
The attic was dusty and dark. She saw piles of boxes, furniture, books, and clothes. She wondered what secrets they held. She walked around and looked for something interesting.
She noticed a large steamer trunk in the corner. It was locked with a padlock. She wondered what was inside. She searched for a key, but couldn't find one.
She decided to try to break the lock. She found a hammer and a screwdriver and started to pry it open. After a few minutes, she heard a click. She opened the trunk and saw its contents.
She was surprised to see a lot of old clothes, jewelry, photos, and documents. They looked like they belonged to someone from a different time and place. She felt like she had discovered a treasure chest.
She started to examine the items one by one. She saw dresses, hats, gloves, and shoes that looked like they were from the 1920s. She saw pearls, diamonds, rubies, and emeralds that sparkled in the light. She saw pictures of a beautiful woman with blond hair and blue eyes, smiling and posing in exotic locations. She saw letters, postcards, tickets, and passports that showed her travels around the world.
She was fascinated by the woman's life. She wondered who she was and why she had left all these things behind. She wanted to know more about her.
She picked up one of the passports and opened it. It was from France. It had the woman's name, date of birth, and photo. It also had stamps from various countries she had visited.
She read the name aloud: "Claire Dubois."
She felt a chill run down her spine. She recognized the name. It was the same name as her grandmother.
She looked at the photo again. It was her grandmother. But she looked so different. So young and glamorous.
She couldn't believe it. Her grandmother had been a world traveler and a fashion icon in her youth. She had never told anyone about her past.
She wondered why she had hidden it. Why she had locked it away in this trunk.
She decided to ask her grandmother about it. She closed the trunk and took the passport with her. She ran downstairs and called her grandmother on the phone.
"Grandma, I have something to show you," she said.
"What is it, dear?" her grandmother asked.
"It's a passport from France. It has your name and photo on it," she said.
There was silence on the other end of the line.
"Grandma?" Emma asked.
"Where did you find it?" her grandmother asked in a low voice.
"In the attic of our new house," Emma said.
There was another silence.
"Emma, listen to me carefully," her grandmother said. "You have to put that passport back where you found it. And don't tell anyone about it."
"Why? What's wrong?" Emma asked.
"Please, just do as I say," her grandmother said. "It's for your own safety."
Emma was confused and scared.
"Grandma, please tell me what's going on," she said.
Her grandmother sighed.
"Emma, I'm sorry," she said. "But there are some things you're not ready to know."
And then she hung up.
